Big mean mama

Believe it or not, Fly isn't the most obedient two-year-old this world has ever seen. I know, you are shocked. The Fly you know is smart, charming and terminally cute. But he has a strong will. If you put him on the floor in the Capitol building when Democrats and Republicans are arguing, they will agree to anything if it means finally getting him out of the District of Columbia and not having to deal with him again.

Sometimes when he doesn't listen to me, I call his bluff. For example, when we come home from being somewhere, he doesn't want to come inside. He wants to sit in the driver's seat of my car and play with the controls, run down the street, see what's in the neighbor's yard, smell the other neighbor's flowers, check the mailbox and pick up stray sticks or leaves. But I might have to pee, or I might have heavy bags of groceries, and it's time to go inside right now. Fly doesn't understand right now (unless he wants a cookie). So I might go inside and close the door, watching him from there and hoping that gets his attention.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

Today, Fly didn't want to take a nap. But I knew he was tired. I told him it was time to sleep. I went to his room, hoping he would follow me. He didn't. I would have picked him up and carried him to his room, but I am in a phase when I am trying to get him to listen to me without intervening like that. (Hey, I can hear you! Stop laughing!) Ten minutes later, he showed up, when I grabbed him and sat him in my lap as usual for some songs and talking about our day so far. Fly hurled himself off my lap and onto the floor.

Because it had already been a tantrumy day, I'd had it. "You can put yourself to sleep!" I said, calling his bluff and and retreating to another room.

And that's exactly what he did.

And when I came back and saw him curled up on the floor, I felt like a big meanie.

I think I need a time-out.

Sleep while the sleeping is good

That's been my motto around here lately. And even if I can't sleep, I try to be horizontal when I can. Now that I'm coming up on 16 weeks in this pregnancy, I am hoping and wishing and waiting for that second-trimester second wind to come along. I am not exaggerating when I say I can start dreaming with my eyes open.

Things are a little different for me this time around. I don't have the atomic heartburn I had when I was pregnant with Fly. But I do have dysgeusia. I don't have the nosebleeds with this baby, but I have rhinitis of pregnancy. One thing that's the same is lower back pain.

Oh, and of course that fatigue.

Another thing that's different with this pregnancy is my weight. I started off this time around weighing eight pounds more than I did when I was newly pregnant with Fly. (But still wearing the same size clothes somehow.) That doesn't make me happy, especially because I told myself if I ever got pregnant again, I didn't want to gain as much weight as I did last time -- 40 pounds. At the time, even my OB/Gyn was cautioning me about my weight. JP's mother gained half that amount (back when women were told not to gain weight during pregnancy), and JP was two ounces heavier than Fly when he was born.

So I was already weight-conscious.

And then it happened. Someone made a comment about my weight. A friend told me, "You've gained some weight," and I'm like, "No kidding." But inside, I was devastated. I had been feeling pretty good about myself, after overhearing some friends tell another mom at the playground that I was already (barely) in my second trimester, and the woman acted amazed that I was even pregnant because she couldn't tell. I am still wearing my regular clothes. But after my friend's comment, I felt like a big blob. I actually skipped dinner that day -- I wasn't truly hungry anyway. And when I am around that friend, I feel nervous eating.

I don't want anyone to think I'm endangering my baby by starving myself. I'm definitely not. I'm just saying my weight is more of an issue for me this time around.

And the sleep -- ahhh, the sleeping. It makes me yawn just thinking about it.

Knowing now the sleep deprivation that a new baby brings, I'm going to get in all the pillow time I can while I'm able.

Zzzzzz....

What I'd Wear Wednesday: Zzzzzz

What I'd wear today if I could: a sleep mask like this one found at Etsy. I need some zzzs. I seem to be so tired lately. I could nap every day.

I used to think sleep masks were so frou-frou and silly, but then I found out my friend Roo uses one. She likes them because they really block the light. That's perfect if you like to sleep inside a light-free cocoon like myself -- especially handy for taking naps during the day when the sun is in full force.

Now please 'scuse me.

Zzzzzz.....

No rest for the weary

I am trying not to flip out.

Fly, the great non-sleeping child, seems to be giving up his nap.

Never mind that his buddies are still taking two naps a day.

Desperate for some answers, I found this article at Imperfect Parent. This poor woman definitely had it worse. The conclusion she eventually reached was to accept that her child was going to sleep whenever he felt like it, and not sleep when he didn't -- even if it was 3 a.m. She got tired of his not sleeping being an issue. So she made peace with it.

I am not sure I can come to that same mind set.

But I suppose it's better than the mental-breakdown alternative . . . .

"Silly!"

Tuesday afternoon. Fly is not napping. Mama is not happy.

I slip into another room just for a few minutes of peace apart from a Tasmanian devil leprechaun an overtired little angel.

When I come out, Fly runs to me and hugs my legs as if he hasn't seen me all day. I pick him up, and he shows me one of his latest tricks: an open-mouth kiss. (He hasn't learned to put his lips together yet.)

Then I see a diaper on the floor.

I check exactly what it is I'm holding in my arms.

"Fly, you little nudie!"

His eyes light up, and he smiles.

"You took off your diaper!"

"Silly!" Fly says.

And in spite of myself -- and surprised at his developing sense of humor -- I agree.

"Yes, you are silly!"

And a future class clown is born....

Not far enough

Today, Fly was up for 13 hours. Yesterday, it was 14 hours.

If those hours were spent happily sitting on my lap while I read him books, or walking around the back yard, or playing with balls or blocks or any other toy, it wouldn't be so bad.

But Fly gets overtired, refuses to sleep, and spends this time crying nearly nonstop. I can't make him happy. (Is it any wonder I have a hard time blogging and commenting lately? I'm a bad parent blogger.)

This just drives me out of my mind. Then when JP comes home and sees the state I'm in, he gets cranky, too, and basically judges me for my attitude. So all three of us are miserable.

How far would you go for your kids?

Since I can't do anything to help Fly, apparently, I don't go far enough.

Update: Thank you, everyone, for your sympathy and suggestions. I really, really appreciate them. (And you!) I'm happy to report that Fly is back to napping -- and it seems JP has gotten the message about my sanity, as he spent a lot of time with Fly this weekend so I could relax a little.

"And now, I just want you to go to sleep, I don't wanna hear a peep"

JP and I have certainly had our issues with Fly and sleep (especially now that he is sick, when he broke his own record of being awake for 10 hours with an 11.5-hour marathon of fussing). As much as I pray Fly will eventually be a good sleeper, I know there will always be sleep angst. Which brings me to this hil-ar-i-ous video. Click, listen closely, and enjoy....

Jumping to dreamland

Ahh... sweet baby sleeps. While I was in the bathroom this morning, JP put Fly in his Jumperoo. (I was surprised Fly didn't cry because lately he hasn't been lovin' it.) Then I said goodbye to JP at the door, found Fly playing happily in his Jumperoo and decided to do a quick e-mail check.

At some point, I realized Fly was completely silent. When I went over to him, he was asleep in his Jumperoo! Amazing! This has never happened.

Is it wrong that this is now my favorite way to see Flybaby?!

Face off

So I've been on this nutritional facelift diet for only 10 hours now, and already I'm hungry and ready to dive into the cheese 'n' crackers JP likes to take to work for a snack.

I'm not on the diet to lose weight. I'm doing it in the hopes of getting my face back. I want my face back! The face before the pregnancy melasma and the bloating. (Now I've got jowls-in-the-making, I'm pretty sure of it.) I want my face from before the hormones made little volcanoes erupt on my chin. (You can still see traces of a couple of them there.) Sleep deprivation and motherly worry have taken their toll as well -- just look at those hollow eyes and that lined forehead!

But really, who am I kidding? I can blame some of my facial problems on pregnancy and motherhood, but not all of them. Since I turned 25, I think I've noticed some new problem on my face or body every year. That's more than 10 new weird things going on! Except most of them aren't even new anymore.

- - - - -

JP has been sick (or suffering from food poisoning, we can't really tell) starting with Friday night, and he stayed home today. Because I get an average of five pieced-together hours of sleep each night, it killed me to see him sleep the day away. Where were the hours of sleep for me when I had mastitis?! Ha! Just knowing I couldn't even get the sleep I need if I got sick, now that's enough to make me sick.

- - - - -

Speaking of sleep, until JP got sick/poisoned, we I tried a couple nights of sleep training on Flybaby. He should be able to go at least six hours, right? (Apparently, sleeping through the night was just a fluke.) So one night, I patted his tummy and stroked his head until he stopped crying and fell back asleep, and the next night (the night JP got sick) was JP's turn, until he got sick. So. The next night, JP was too ill to make sure Fly got a proper dinner (he was on dinner duty while I was away that one night), so guess who was up nursing the baby to make sure he wouldn't be hungry? And the next night, I was too tired to remember I was supposed to pat Flybaby back to sleep, and I nursed him every time he got up.

Oh, sleep. What a weary subject. With that, I'm off to bed at 10 pm.... I need all the beauty rest I can get!
