What I'd Wear Wednesday: Recession chic
What I'd wear today if I could: Well, it's really not what I would wear, but if this economic crisis keeps going the way it has the past couple weeks, I might end up wearing a barrel!
Or a sandwich board!
Um, but perhaps with a different slogan on the front.
I suppose I could always shop at consignment stores. Yard sales. My own closet. I sometimes sew my own clothes, but that's not always the bargain you might think it is -- maybe if I used recycled materials like gum wrappers?
Or duct tape?
Promise not to call the paddy wagon for me....
Have you bought anything for yourself recently, or do you plan to soon?

honey only you can make the recession look chic :)
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Sorry.
I was just picturing myself at the park with the girlies and my grandkids with me wearing a barrel.
Personally I dig the bubble gum wrapper dress ... that's a lot of bubbles.
As for buying myself something ... $14.95 sweater dress from Target.
Very Funny!
I have my own What I'd Where Wednesday up today.
I haven't bought anything for myself for quite some time. I bought a handful of necessities last summer after the baby was born. You know the bargains you buy telling yourself they don't have to be too stylish because by next summer you will have lost all the baby weight. Which I haven't. So I worn the same wardrobe this summer, too. Refusing to buy new clothes because I was going to lose weight and I wanted to buy a smaller size. But weeks and weeks into my new "healthy lifestyle" (aka a diet) and I'm only 4 lbs lighter and not anywhere closer to buying new clothes. sigh.
It would be really hard to sit down in that barrel outfit. Maybe if there was a seat built in somehow it would be more comfortable.
I bought myself a pair of new shoes last week. Black mary janes. Super cute. 75% off. They would look awesome with that barrel.
What is up with that sign?
Eww. If those dresses were at least a better shape, I would be all "Wow! Cool!" Not attractive.
Seriously, why is it that making your own clothes isn't a bargain? It really ought to be, considering all the effort of clothing is in the assembly? They must mark up fabric like crazy compared to what the mass manufacturers pay for it...bleh
I'm just hoping to scrounge up enough money to buy three pair of snow pants and three pair of boots for the kids before the snow sets in. And I'm in desperate need of a new winter coat, myself.
New clothes? Not gonna happen anytime soon . . .
The good thing about a recession is the sales. Too bad we still can't afford it.
Way too cute! Unfortunately I don't think any of this would fit in my closet . . .
You are too funny!
Steph
Sad, isn't it, that making your own clothes isn't a bargain. It's really hard to find good fabric too.
If I had skills, here's what I'd do: I'd buy stuff thrift (there's a ton of stuff available in my community for next to nothing) and then remake it. Or buy stuff on clearance for $2 and use the fabric to make something else. That would work!
Great photos. Thanks for the laugh. I have bought nothing for myself lately (although that's partially because only stretchy, plastic garbage bags fit me now).
I have definitely done some shopping lately. My most recent purchase was a fabulous purse that's big enough for all my stuff and Levi's stuff. A purse that big and still cute is a rare find. I had to splurge.
I suppose the duct tape dress would repel water nicely? i can't imagine taking it off at the end of the night, though. Ouch!
I bought a black sweater the other day. I'm so adventurous!
I once made a santa suit out of duct tape and it actually looked pretty good. We were on a Submarine under the water at Christmas so I made the costume and gave out presents. Candy was all I had but I bought as much as I could afford and handed it out. I have a photo somewhere that I need to put my hands on. I do have to tell you that it was very hot so if you are planning on making a dress out of it be ready to sweat. With that many gum wrappers it might be cheaper just to buy a dress.
I need some new shoes but I am waiting until I can save up and pay cash.
I agree. Making your own clothes or your kids clothes isn't worth it. The must make up the decent fabric like crazy!!!!
On anther note, I have a confession to make. Due to the hurricane (not driving anywhere for 2 weeks and not going out to eat), buying a new car that gets 45 mpg (3 times what we were getting) and having 2 extra music gigs this month I had some extra money to play with. I just bought my first Coach purse. Black and classic. Hopefully, I won't get tired of it and it will see much wear. Just doing my part to get us out of this economic mess!
Certainly NOT what I was expecting for What I'd Wear Wednesday but you included some of your most classic fashions yet. :)
love it!! you could so rock duct tape!
Bought for myself... I did buy our whole family high school football team shirts. It is so we don't get arrested on game days her in this town.
I do like the barrel, it would fit my shape. ; )
The things people make with gum wrappers, incredible.
After buying yet more clothes for ever growing kids, I managed to sneak in one long sleeved t-shirt for me. Whoo-hoo!
