He calls it as he sees it
Lately, ants have turned up in every room in our house (even the bathroom on the toilet! where I can assure you no one eats!), and I'm revolted. I try to keep things clean, so I got frustrated.
Then I remembered that I used to keep ant traps around the house because the idea of someone spraying pesticides around my house every month is even more revolting. But I stopped setting out the traps when Fly started crawling -- I couldn't let him find one and start chewing on it.
(I'm surprised that I'm still surprised how motherhood makes you forget what your life was like before kids.)
Fly still chews on almost everything, but something had to be done about the ants. So I set out the traps again. There! Say goodbye to feeling as though my whole house is moving!
Of course, it was just a matter of time before he found an ant trap.
Yesterday, I saw him discover one of the little white disc-like things in a corner. I watched him pick it up and show it to me. My fear of him chewing on an ant trap were unfounded, however.
"Yucky!" he said immediately, and he walked to the trash and threw it away.
(When did he learn to throw things away?)
Score one for Fly -- and one for the ants.

I've been told (never tried it) that sprinkling a little jello (still in the powdered form, of course) also kill ants. They even carry it back to the queen and kill her, too. Or, so I've heard. And then even if Fly does eat it, no harm done. :)
Ugh don't you HATE those ants?! We used to get them EVERY year... we have a monthly exterminator now and it keeps them away... knock on wood! LOL
I've heard the same thing about the jello. I've never tried it though.
Too cute about Fly throwing it away! :)
We battle the ants at the beginning of every summer and it. drives. me. crazy. I'm going to have to try jello.
Ewww...I would hate to have ants all over my house! My parents used to have them in the basement real bad...and you know what they did? They put some honey in a shallow dish (like a lid or something) and the ants LOVE it and crawl into it and die. Although...if Fly gets a taste of some honey he'd probably want to eat it too! ;)
There is stuff you can sprinkle around the outside of your house, that may help. I hate ants with a passion. We had an infestation so bad that they were getting in our dishwasher big time. We would run the dishwasher a few times just to get rid of all the ant bodies in it and on our dishes. Gag!
We tried those things this year too. Primo wasn't too bad (we kept them all outside where we thought they were coming in) but my idiot dog chewed one. He didn't get anything, but that doesn't make him any less stupid. I tried cornmeal, and it works. Also, they won't cross a line of cinnamon.
Hurray for Fly! He's one smart cookie. Smarter than my husband. He sometimes just leaves his trash right near the trash bin!
Smart kid! Right now the "yucky" things are very attractive to Esme, especially if I call them "yucky!"
Good luck with the ants . . .
It seems like every year we get a few ants in a different spot. Not this year, though. Weird... I usually spray and then wipe and then spray and wipe and that seems to do the job.
We tried cornmeal too. It can be messy, but it does seem to work.
I'd be leary of trying jello...That could get really sticky!
What a good boy for throwing away that icky trash. You know, of coursem that now anytime ANYTHING is misssing you'll have to go digging through the trash in case he found it and thought it was "Yucky". :D (It's better than the toilet, right?)
I'm not a fan of the pesticide sprays either. I opt for the ant traps, but luckily(?) we've only ever had them on the kitchen counters (nasty) so Isabella hasn't been able to reach any.
That Fly is going to be an animal crusader one day!
I hate ants, but I hate fleas more - ICK!
BTW I gave you an award ... a yummy one :)
That he threw the ant trap away is just SO INCREDIBLY CUTE ... I don't know what else to say!
Baby powder is suppose to work at the point of enrty also.
Too cool that he spotted yuckiness and dealt with it so well!!!
Ants ... ew ... I have never had to deal so, but interesting on the jello idea.
Yuck! I hate the ant battle. Good luck to you. Maybe Fly will start picking up the ants and throwing them away. ;)
Ants, they seem to show up everywhere! Fly is one smart boy!!!
