Where I'd be today if I could

I've never done a blog carnival, but when I saw that today's Photo Friday is where you'd like to be, I knew immediately.

Where I'd be today if I could: Sinkyone Wilderness State Park in northern California.

I've never been there, but after reading about it in National Geographic Adventure magazine, I just knew I must make a pilgrimage there at least once in my life.

Has anyone been there? Please, please tell me it's even better than all the photos I've seen and the article I read.....

Do you know the muffin mom?

Yesterday, I called JP's mother, MM, to ask what we could bring to her house for Easter dinner. I told her I'd bring just about anything.

She said she thought some mini muffins would go well with what else she had planned to serve, and she asked if I had a mini muffin pan she thought she gave me a few years ago.

I looked.

I don't have it.

I really don't remember it. And I definitely wouldn't have gotten rid of it if she had given it to me. I like baking (although I don't do as much now), and I like using fun pans like that.

So JP, who works near his parents' home, comes home from work with a big, flowery bag from his parents with some pretty silk flowers, a couple of cute outfits for Flybaby, a Target gift card, and this:

Two mini muffin pans. Easter mini muffin liners. And a box of muffin mix.

Which begs the question, if MM already had these things, why didn't she make the muffins herself?

Or another question: am I really that incompetent?

Hmm....

Facelift update

I lasted two days on the three-day facelift diet. This morning, I felt so weak, I could hardly hold Flybaby. So after the facelift breakfast, I caved and had a multigrain bagel and some light cream cheese. For lunch, I added a little chicken noodle soup. Heresy, I know. But I tell ya, I felt a whole lot better afterwards. Maybe I have low blood sugar and don't know it ...? I'm pretty sure I got a carb gene or something.

But another part of not lasting through day three? JP. With comments like:

"Oh no, a carrot! There's a wrinkle in the making."

"Don't give Flybaby bananas, they're the food of the wrinkle gods!"

"I sure hope you don't end up looking like the people in the 'after' pictures in this book."

Etc.

What can I say, dontcha love a guy who actually encourages his wife to eat chocolate ice cream?

Ah, Michelle, ma belle. Vous are so mysterious. You comment all the time, but I am not sure who you are, with no blog and no e-mail. Please e-mail me directly at growingalife at gmail dot com, and we can chat.

What I'd Wear Wednesday

What I'd wear today if I could: this chiffon top/minidress from Urban Outfitters. I love its flowy softness, the mottled design and the colors. It's simple and pretty. Spring is here! I'd probably lose the belt, though. It's too chunky for such a delicate top, if you ask me. Maybe a sash in a coordinating color ...? Not the kind of thing to wear during the everyday mom routine, for sure, but for that weekend brunch with the girlfriends I've been pining for....

PS: I see that singers Joss Stone and Avril Lavigne have cherry-pink highlights in their hair now. Like I did last summer....

Face off

So I've been on this nutritional facelift diet for only 10 hours now, and already I'm hungry and ready to dive into the cheese 'n' crackers JP likes to take to work for a snack.

I'm not on the diet to lose weight. I'm doing it in the hopes of getting my face back. I want my face back! The face before the pregnancy melasma and the bloating. (Now I've got jowls-in-the-making, I'm pretty sure of it.) I want my face from before the hormones made little volcanoes erupt on my chin. (You can still see traces of a couple of them there.) Sleep deprivation and motherly worry have taken their toll as well -- just look at those hollow eyes and that lined forehead!

But really, who am I kidding? I can blame some of my facial problems on pregnancy and motherhood, but not all of them. Since I turned 25, I think I've noticed some new problem on my face or body every year. That's more than 10 new weird things going on! Except most of them aren't even new anymore.

- - - - -

JP has been sick (or suffering from food poisoning, we can't really tell) starting with Friday night, and he stayed home today. Because I get an average of five pieced-together hours of sleep each night, it killed me to see him sleep the day away. Where were the hours of sleep for me when I had mastitis?! Ha! Just knowing I couldn't even get the sleep I need if I got sick, now that's enough to make me sick.

- - - - -

Speaking of sleep, until JP got sick/poisoned, we I tried a couple nights of sleep training on Flybaby. He should be able to go at least six hours, right? (Apparently, sleeping through the night was just a fluke.) So one night, I patted his tummy and stroked his head until he stopped crying and fell back asleep, and the next night (the night JP got sick) was JP's turn, until he got sick. So. The next night, JP was too ill to make sure Fly got a proper dinner (he was on dinner duty while I was away that one night), so guess who was up nursing the baby to make sure he wouldn't be hungry? And the next night, I was too tired to remember I was supposed to pat Flybaby back to sleep, and I nursed him every time he got up.

Oh, sleep. What a weary subject. With that, I'm off to bed at 10 pm.... I need all the beauty rest I can get!

Rock-a-bye redux

Rock-a-bye Fly
In the treetop.
Fly will sing.
Fly will rock!
He'll play piano,
He will play drums,
And when he is finished,
He'll suck on his thumbs.

Wardrobe Wednesday, rant edition

What I'd wear today if I could: well, it's tricky. Some of you have left comments saying you couldn't/wouldn't wear this or that because of your shape or size. I detect a lot of disappointment in the body image department from the blogosphere in general. And it makes me a little sad.

I say, phooey! Almost everyone who has commented on previous Wardrobe Wednesdays is a mother, right? And our bodies are powerful. They are beautiful. Our bodies not only create and foster life, but have the ability to nourish that life -- beautiful children who are healthy and smart. Contrary to what our society would have us buy into, most women aren't supposed to stay the stick-thin teens we might have once been. Some women's bodies are built that way, but most aren't. Someday, I hope we as a society can value our bodies for what they do and not what they look like -- like our brains!

I'm all for losing weight to maintain a healthy size, eating nutritious foods and working out. But I still think real women have curves. Real women have muscle. Real women come in all shapes and sizes, however God made us. Me, my clothing sizes are all over the place. I can fit into some of my pre-preggo clothes, but not all of them. And recently when I bought a pair of pants, they were a size 10, mingling with clothes sized from 6 to 12 (which all fit). I wear small, medium and large tops -- depending on the cut and style -- over my breastfeeding 36D boobs. What I'm trying to say in this confessional is that I am not skinny. (I think I was skinny for only two years of my life, from 12 to 14. Then my mother's hips arrived.)

Yes, the models wearing the clothes I have posted look like they could use a few foot-long sub sandwiches. But that's a model for ya. I'm not looking at them -- just what they're wearing. I imagine wearing what I have posted because it looks beautiful, not because I have the model's body. (Or I imagine wearing what I have posted because I'd never actually spend that kind of money on clothes, in the case of some posts!) I wouldn't want the model's body, anyway, because I love to eat too much!

Despite my soapbox preaching, this week I went looking for clothes that I thought would look good on a variety of sizes (all available at Nordstrom), in the hopes of offering the fashion equivalent of an olive branch to anyone who might have thought I was a body snob:

This tie-back dress by Velvet Torch. Tie-back dresses and tops are good for creating the perfect fit around the waist because you control how tight you tie it! This dress has soft gathers, too, so it should be good at hiding a "tummy."

And then there's this knit dress by Frenchi, which has a similar thing going on. Plus, if you ask me, I think the kimono-style sleeves that are in right now help make your waist and hips look smaller:

Even big-time designer Marc Jacobs has this dress, which has simple lines so you could dress it up or down, as they say:

Now, excuse me while I go get my afternoon snack! I recommend you do the same!

Real moms

Real moms have breast milk stains on the couch.

Real moms have family rooms that look like play rooms.

Real moms let real dads make the baby look silly for a photo opp.

Thanks, Kristen, for this great real-mom idea! It's so fun I might do it again sometime....

What comes up, part 2

For anyone who's interested, Flybaby slept pretty well last night, waking up only once and staying up for only 20 minutes. So maybe there's something to the Prevacid after all. Except he still seems to have the same symptoms during the day -- coughing like he's gagging on something, spitting up, face turning red with coughing when he's lying down.

JP thinks Fly's better sleep could be from the new blankets I "made" out of fleece fabric. Fly has grown out of his newborn blankets for the most part. JP thinks Flybaby sleeps better swaddled (even though I thought a 6-month-old baby should have outgrown the need for swaddling), so....

Or maybe Flybaby is sleeping better because of the new bedtime cream I am massaging him with lately that claims to help babies sleep better. That's been part of our bedtime routine since he was 2 months old: bath and a massage. I usually use nonscented products for Flybaby, but yes -- I fell for a product that claimed to help a baby sleep better. The people at Johnson's aren't stupid.

This is what gets me about parenting: it seems like a guessing game. Why is he doing this or that? Is it because of one thing or another? If I do this one thing, will it affect him so he'll do that? How come something worked for him last week but not now? What's behind Door Number Three? Once Flybaby gets older and starts requiring guidance/discipline, I know the guesses and what-ifs will just multiply.

Heaven help the walls for all the stuff I will have to throw at them to see what sticks!

What comes up should stay down

Flybaby slept through the night last night.

Ho hum, you say? Yawn?

Fly hasn't slept through the night in months. In fact, lately he hasn't slept more than three hours at a time.

I haven't chronicled it here, but JP and I think Flybaby has an acid reflux problem. The pediatrician agrees. We tried Zantac in vain. Then, yesterday for the first time after a follow-up appointment and a change to Prevacid, Fly did much better. (I also changed my diet for a while, with no improvements for Fly.) An appointment with a specialist is likely to follow. Elevating the crib mattress, check. Keeping him upright after meals, check. Trying homeopathic remedies, check. Listening to JP's mother during two separate phone calls about how other people's babies did so much better after a change of bottle, or nipple, or the addition of rice cereal to the bottle, even though I reminded her Flybaby is breastfed. Check.

But did I mention Fly slept all night? As in, thank you, Sweet Jesus, nine hours?

Except, I still got about four cumulative hours of sleep. As usual.

Because I just knew he was going to wake up before midnight. Why bother sleeping?

Midnight came and went, so I got in bed, but he was sure to wake up. So I rested quietly for two hours before falling asleep.

And I got up twice during the night to check on him. Suspicious.

So today, I thought, we'll see what it's like for a well-rested baby to proclaim his energetic self all day to a fatigued mother.

Except Fly threw up everything -- everything, meds included, I'm sure -- this morning after breakfast.

We win some, we lose some. We change both our clothes and sponge off the couch.

I don't like the idea of medicating my baby, but JP and I couldn't stand the thought of him being in pain from the acid creeping into his esophagus -- which was any time Flybaby was lying down (diaper changes, change of clothes, sleeping) and some of the time when he was upright as well. Also, we are all very tired -- especially me. So we have to cure this thing. It looks as though the Prevacid is going to work. If Flybaby can keep it down....

Wardrobe Wednesday

What I'd wear today if I could: this jeans outfit by BCBG Max Azria. This would be just so cool to wear to the "baby and me" class that Flybaby and I are supposed to be at right now. (The chunky gold bangle would have to go for the purposes of the class.) But, my little darlin' fell asleep before I could get us out the door (I had shoes on already, people!), and so I won't be wearing this today.

Now, in my alternate universe, this Nicole Miller outfit is what I'd be wearing:

Because that top looks just sooo dreamy....

Blog party: It's better to give than to receive

Sigh. I don't know about you, but I needed this weekend to relax after that weeklong blog party.

But I have good news: I have not one, but four winners of good Growing A Life stuff. I offered a customized onesie or baby T-shirt to a lucky person in the official blog party giveaways, but ended up awarding three additional prizes! And it feels great! I love giving things to people.

First, the official blog party winner of my giveaway is Toddler Planet. Who has yet to contact me about the prize. Are you out there ...? Earth to Toddler Planet.... hee hee

Also, I had to award life as a mama a baby T-shirt for her silly comment to my original party post, and another to Adventures in Babywearing for being such a good commenter the whole party through. Thanks, chicas!

Then there's Mrs. Mogul, who won a makeup case for her joke.

Congrats, everyone!

And it's been great to meet so many bloggers:

Blog party: Make me laugh and win!

Update: I've gotta go with Mrs. Mogul as the prize winner, who left a funny joke I hadn't heard before! Thanks, everyone, for making me laugh, though!

OK, today is supposed to be the last day of this blog party. But I don't think we've told one joke yet. I mean, some of you have left uproariously humorous comments. (Thanks very much!) But how about some jokes?

To encourage you, how about this: I'm offering up a brand new ($20 tag still on it!) white patent leather makeup case with product samples for the best joke! This case has handles and has hard sides, not like most squishy-soft makeup cases. There are even pockets inside! Into which is stuffed shampoos, soaps, lotions and a container of Lancome makeup sponges. It's yours (U.S. or Canada winner) if you can make me ROTFL. No fair copying and pasting a joke from somewhere online -- you have to tell it in your own words.... Try to keep it (mostly) clean, because this contest is really for me to have something new and funny to say at JP's birthday party tonight.

And don't think I haven't forgotten about my suggestion that I give away not only my officially offered baby onesie or T-shirt, but perhaps an additional onesie or T-shirt to someone. I just want to see who's winning the official one first. I think the winners are going to be announced tonight!

Let's make one another laugh!

Blog party: It's a birthday!

Not only do we get to celebrate during this blog party, but today is my beloved JP's birthday. Happy birthday! (For the record, JP hates the name "JP," but it's kinda too late to change his name now, huh? Sometimes he calls himself "the husbland," so that's what I'll label him when posting about him from now on.) He's a great guy, a loving husband and my best friend, and I'm lucky to be married to him.

JP loves chocolate cake. It's something we have in common. So today, I baked him a kick-butt cake using the recipe on the Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa container. Oh, man. This cake is almost black. It's so good! (I had leftover batter and sneaked in a cupcake, so it passes the taste test.)

And here's my special cake tip: Instead of frosting or icing, make a cake special by melting chocolate chips or baking chocolate, and frost that cake with that instead. It hardens up as it cools, of course, creating a nice finish that always impresses people. It's like getting candy and cake in one slice!

Blog party: Six months!

Flybaby is six months old today!

I had him on my lap this morning at the computer, and he seemed interested in in the keyboard. (As in, more than just for chewing and drooling on it.) Aha! My boy is a writer, just like me. I knew it. I could tell by his anguished cries. So I let Flybaby type, and this is what he wrote:

"0053; 0020\ 400"

Like I said, he's a brilliant mathematician!

What I'd wear today if could: this dress from Boston Proper. I love dressing up for parties. (Heck, it's a good day if I wear anything that remotely matches these days!) It's got a cool black-and-white print, it's shapely, it's got a flowy skirt -- what's not to love?

So this is what I'd wear to this fun blog party we're having. What are you wearing today?

Blog party: mom talk

OK, this blog party is pumping now. Right about halfway through. And like in other parties, around this time, someone starts up a quasi-intellectual discussion. Like:

- Do you personally feel you have obtained self-actualization as described in Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs? Or do you disagree we can be self-actualized? Maybe you don't even care ...?

- Does ecotourism really help the environment by educating tourists and by creating awareness, or does it just invite the hoards to trample pristine wilderness areas?

- Who really let the dogs out?

I was reading a magazine I confessed to grabbing from my pediatrician's office and found an article that gave the mag some surprising substance for all its style. A mother detailed what it's like for her daughter to grow up in Manhattan, where the family lives 75% of the time, and what it's like when they are living in Maine the rest of the time. She points out parenting styles are vastly different in these two locations, and (from what I gathered) she tends to follow suit wherever they are living at the time. For example: Maine folks don't fuss over their kids when they fall down or are kicked by farm animals -- it might even be good for them -- while in Manhattan, if a child falls out of her stroller onto the pavement, a crowd forms and starts pointing fingers. Or something like that. The article asks, "Should kids be totally safe and bored, or slightly bruised and amused?"

I'd like to say, of course, I would parent my way no matter where I was living, no matter who was around me and what other parents might say. But maybe it's not always going to be so cut and dried? Will circumstances sometimes make me "fall in line" with the thinking of the other parents around me? Will I {gulp} be a sheep? A lemming?!

And so I wonder, happy party bloggers, what do you think? Is it better to play it safe and follow the parenting trends where you live? Or do you dare to refute the commonly/locally held thoughts about the best/right ways to raise a child?

Hmm....

Blog party: belly shot (aka "the bump")

OK, whose great idea was it that everyone joining in this blog party is supposed to show a photo of yourself being hugely pregnant?

But I'm caving in to peer pressure. I'm like that at parties.

JP took this photo of me the Saturday before Flybaby was born. I was two days past my due date, and we had nothing better to do, so we went to the beach.

The beach, people! Do you know how hard it is to heft your pregnant self across the soft sand?!

But JP made me smile anyway. So here I am, 40-some pounds heavier and feeling like a cow. Take a good look now, because I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to take this photo down!

Blog Party: New favorite toys!

Welcome back to the party! It' s Monday, but that's no excuse to stop partying. We're on a roll now! This party is going to last all week.

People at parties love to talk about their new "toys," whether it's their new Wii system, cell phone, bread machine or facial steamer. (Yes, I've been to a party where someone talked about her facial steamer.)

Well, Flybaby wants to share his new favorite toys, sent to him from the nice folks at School Zone Publishing. They have a new line for babies, and Fly was more than happy to try out the Infant Magnetic Peek-a-Boo Bunny Guess Who cards and the Fuzzy Animal Friends Clever Baby Cards. Flybaby loves the Fuzzy Animal Friends cards, especially the crocodile with the googly eyes (which has held up really well to the chewing -- see Fly's two bottom teeth?):

These cards are so cute! And appropriately named, because they are clever -- the swan's neck

becomes the monkey's tail on the other side of the card

(No, that's not something special on the monkey's butt. Just the camera flash.)

These cards are created for babies six months and up, so they are just perfect for Fly, who will turn six months old this week!

The Peek-a-Boo Bunny cards are for babies nine months and up, but that didn't deter Flybaby from playing. Nope, not at all!

I think he will appreciate them more in a few months. The idea of the cards -- which are magnetic and slightly stick to the main card -- feature a bunny who can play peek-a-boo:

You place the cards on the main bunny card. Like this one: "Peek-a-boo! Who lives in the pond?" On the other side of the card is a flap with a frog on it. "Frog lives in the pond!" And you move the bunny's feet away from his eyes to play peek-a-boo. There are six cards like that.

Flybaby likes the cards because sometimes, his attention span is still too short for me to read a full book, and yet I can read the cards to him and play with him with these colorful, tactile cards!

So thanks for stopping by on the party. What are some of your little ones' favorite new toys?

Blog party: Three books worth reading

What's a party without a discussion about the latest books you're reading?

Flybaby is really too young to fully appreciate a good picture book (unless he’s chewing on it). But I read to him anyway.

In the past couple of months, I’ve taken to going to the library and picking up books at random that I read to him, and these are my current favs (and yeah, I've taken the images from Amazon and eBay. I know, I'm lazy!):

Little Pig Is Capable by Denis Roche. This is one of those books that pokes fun at parents, but parents win in the end anyway. (Hurray!) Kids and parents will both enjoy the humor and the way Little Pig turns this “big bad wolf” story around. For the parent who has ever said:

“Sweetie-buns, please wear this scarf. If you don’t you’ll catch a cold, or worse -- you’ll get so sick that you’ll miss second, third AND fourth grades.”

And the kid who has ever felt humiliated by the way his parents fuss over him, this will be a fun read.

Cat Up a Tree by John and Ann Hassett. Sarcastic without being obviously or obnoxiously so, this is a fun book that includes counting, so it’s slightly educational. It’s also slightly civic minded; kids might not get it -- or get it at first -- but the story shows how one person’s small problem can become everyone’s big problem if we fail to help out. And yet, sarcasm and fables were never so funny -- or so sweet!

“Then forty cats tiptoed across the telephone line and hopped in the window into Nana Quimby’s arms.”

Little Frog’s Song by Alice Schertle, illustrated by Leonard Everett Fisher. It’s been said kids love books that have rhythm and repetition, and this book gives kids that satisfaction in a subtle way. When a storm makes Little Frog lose his way home, his journey back constantly reminds him “Home is home. Home is home.” His journey also means he meets new people, of course, and the fear that comes with being lost. But Little Frog’s thoughts and dreams are always on his home:

“When evening came, Little Frog watched the wind whisper through the water reeds. He watched the soft black night quietly cover his pond. He watched the silver moon roll up from behind a hill and slide through the branches of the pine tree.”

I can’t wait to see what will become Flybaby’s favorite books! But until then, I get to pick! What are some of your, or your kids’, favorites?

Blog party: Squeal or no squeal

For about a month and a half or so, Flybaby has been quite the squealer. When babies start making what are politely called "vocalizations," most parents are quite happy because they know "mama" and "dada" are just around the corner.

Well.

Not us.

I know, JP and I are bad parents. But Flybaby's squealing? Um. Let's just say he sounds more like a velociraptor than a human child.

To illustrate, I'm posting a small sample via video, just for the sake of this fantastic blog party we're having. Here is Fly squealing at my precious Baby Kitty who is all grown up (and weighs almost as much as Fly).

(video removed)

Now, if you multiply that squeal by 50 decibels and 10 minutes, that's what we're living with here, folks.

If you commented yesterday, thanks! Looks like several mamas are interested in the customized onesie/T-shirt giveaway! Maybe I should have a contest. What do you think?

Blog Party and first-ever Growing A Life giveaway!

Hey! Glad you could make it to the blog party! Make yourself at home. Grab yourself something to eat or drink over there. Then go and mingle! Have some fun! I tried to clean up around here, but whatever you do, do not open the last door in the hallway, next to the laundry room....

Yes, today's the first day of the Ultimate Blog Party. Meet new bloggers. Endure Be fascinated by new blog posts by moi every day. Win prizes!

The Ultimate Blog Party is organized by 5 Minutes for Mom. I didn't know much about this site before hearing about the party, but what the hey. That's what parties are for. They have a great system for giving away prizes on the last day of the party, so be sure to sign up and win.

Win!

Because they apparently don't have very high standards, they said even I could give away a prize. So I am! You could win a customized springtime onesie or T-shirt for your little one (size 3 months on through to about 25 pounds). And who knows -- if someone leaves a comment that makes me laugh so hard that I wake up Flybaby, I just might give away a second prize.

Er, wait -- is that rewarding someone for bad behavior?

It's a Par-tay!

Tomorrow is the start of the weeklong Blog Party, and I'm so excited! Did I mention I'm looking forward to this? Well, clearly I need to get out more. Believe me, I'm trying.... I hope to blog every day of the party and offer up some bloggity goodness. Come join me in the party! Click on over to the party and sign yourself up because the prizes look amazing, including a prize offered by moi! Yes, free stuff, people! You got nuthin' to lose.

So as I mentioned, Flybaby is growing out of some things, and JP's mom MM said he'll probably need a new carseat soon.

And she's right! At 19 pounds, he's been gaining two or three pounds a month since he was born. I can't believe it's already time for a new carseat.... And because we have the Graco Snugride that snaps into a stroller, we're going to need a new stroller, too.

Now, I have my eye on a carseat already. But what stroller do you recommend? I'd appreciate your help in finding new wheels for Fly.

Danny's Song

When I was 12 years old, my mom and I were driving home from the ice skating rink. She had worked all day, I had been skating all day, and we were both exhausted. We were about two minutes from our house when Danny's Song came on the radio. I was very familiar with this little ditty because my folks played it at their wedding. My father's name is Dan, and when they got married he was still young enough that most people still called him Danny. For their first anniversary, he made a cassette tape of all the songs from their reception. That was back in 1979, so cassettes were a pretty big deal. He called the tape La's Greatest Hits, 'La' being his nickname for my mom Linda.
My mom turned down the music and asked me if I had even really listened to the lyrics of the song. I paused, and in those seconds something clicked in my head. We had just pulled up in front of the house, but instead of getting out of the car, she turned to me. I was silently counting months. July, August, January, February… She started to unfold the story for me.
It was the day of her high school graduation. She was free at last! She was engaged to a man with a good job who just happened to be a very handsome and popular fellow. Life was good. After the ceremonies were over but before the parties began, she started counting, realizing that something was missing.
Their wedding date had been set for October 14th, but by that time it would be obvious. Instead of going out with her friends that night, my mother sat at home with her mother and scrambled to re-plan a wedding for the second Saturday in July. She had the sleeves removed from her wedding dress, not only because they were inappropriate for a summer wedding but also because her breasts had grown seemingly overnight, making them no longer fit properly.
At the wedding, my grandmother was the only person that knew, besides my father. When my parents danced to Danny's Song, she was furious at my mother. She thought people would figure everything out and think my mother was a slut and it was my grandmother's fault. Never mind the fact that up until that point, no one from my grandmother's family had gotten married before they had gotten pregnant. My mother was simply keeping up with the family tradition.
Until a few years ago, my other grandparents actually believed that I was born a month early.
After she finished talking, my mom grabbed my hand. She wanted to tell me all of this, she said, because she wanted to make sure I knew that I wasn't a mistake, and that she loved my father and was planning to marry my father with or without me. Once we went in the house, she took me into her room. From deep in her closet she pulled out a box. Inside were paper napkins and matchbooks that were inscribed with 'Danny and Linda October 14, 1978' just in case I didn't believe her.
Underneath all of the favors were the delicate lace sleeves from her wedding dress.
Fourteen years later. It was a Thursday in the middle of June around 5:30 in the morning. My clock radio goes off. What was playing? Danny's Song. As I made my way to the bathroom, I got a little flutter in my stomach. I had laid everything out the night before so that in my sleepy state I wouldn't forget anything. Pee on the stick, wait two minutes. As the pink line turned from one to two, the lyrics rang through my head.

Now I see a family where there once was none.
And we've just begun.
Yeah, we're gonna fly to the sun.
